THE BEGINNING
The Vietnamese Student Association (VSA) at the University of Virginia was established in 1983 as the first Asian student organization on Grounds. On Tet, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, a group of Vietnamese students resolved to form an organization promoting Vietnamese cultural awareness while assisting each other in university life. Since its founding, VSA has played an important role in fostering a rapidly growing community for Vietnamese and Asian American students.
Over the years, VSA has grown into a dynamic organization focused on cultural, service, and social initiatives. VSA membership is open to all students, regardless of background. More than just a student group, VSA is a home away from home. It is a place where students can explore their identities, find a sense of belonging, and support each other throughout their college journey. Although this organization has members who are University of Virginia students and may have University employees associated or engaged in its activities and affairs, the organization is not a part of or an agency of the University. It is a separate and independent organization which is responsible for and manages its own activities and affairs. The University does not direct, supervise or control the organization and is not responsible for the organization's contracts, acts or omissions. |
COMMUNITY
At the heart of VSA are three guiding pillars: community, culture, and charity.
Community is the foundation of our organization. Whether you're new to Grounds or a returning member, VSA offers a welcoming environment through a variety of social events and member engagement activities. Our family sorting system, introduced at the start of each year with new membership, helps students form close-knit bonds and find a home away from home within our organization. Throughout the year, we host a wide range of social events, such as game nights and outings, all designed to strengthen our internal community and foster lasting friendships.
VSA also connects members to the broader MAUSVA network, giving students opportunities to participate in regional community events and conferences, build relationships with other VSAs, and engage with the larger Vietnamese student community beyond UVA. Events like TurkeyBowl, our annual intercollegiate flag football tournament, bring students together from across the region in , for friendly competition and school spirit.

CULTURE
Culture is central to who we are. VSA takes pride in sharing and celebrating Vietnamese heritage through events that both educate and engage the community. Each spring, we host our annual Tet Show, one of our longest-standing traditions, which celebrates the Vietnamese Lunar New Year through traditional and modern performances, cultural storytelling, and authentic cuisine. In the fall semester, we also participate in UVA’s CultureFest, where VSA showcases Vietnamese culture alongside other multicultural organizations on Grounds.
CHARITY
Charity drives our commitment to service and giving back. Through events like PhoFest, Bánh Mì Fest, and annual fundraisers, we raise awareness and funds for important causes within the Vietnamese and Asian-American communities. These events not only allow us to share delicious Vietnamese food and traditions but also bring people together in support of meaningful initiatives. In addition, VSA offers scholarship opportunities to support students in our community, recognizing academic achievement, leadership, and dedication to cultural involvement.
Together, these pillars guide VSA’s mission to build an inclusive and impactful presence at UVA. Whether through fostering connections, celebrating culture, or serving others, VSA continues to be a space where students can grow, lead, and make a difference.
